Cool Finds via Twitter - Story of first VW Bus Trip and VW Bus Fire

So far being on Twitter is paying off big time for @Ilovevwbuses (Follow us now!). Here are a couple of the really cool things we've found:

We learned that @beachnriver had their first trip from TX to CA in a 1967 Westy Campmobile.

We saw really sad pictures of a VW Bus on fire tweeted by @lachance... stop with the jokes. Its not funny, but yes, it does happen occasionally. You people be safe out there.

Okay, that is all for now, but... well, that is why we need you to follow us or send pics, links, stories to us directly either on Twitter @ilovevwbuses or shoot an email to ihavesomethingforyou @ ilovevwbuses.com.

You see... real VW Buses stopped being produced in 1979 (argue amongst yourselves if you must, but that is the fact, Jack) so it is really difficult to keep finding "news" about buses. If we don't run into one around town, we don't have much to report. And we gotsta keep posting stuff and keep the traffic up so we can start selling ads! Not really, unless you want to advertise here.

Second Week of Bullrun... VW Bus alive and well

The VW Bus guys are still in the game on Bullrun, at least until next week.

Honestly though, I wish I didn't have to sit through the "drama" of Bullrun just to see if the bus makes it. My problem isn't that there is drama, after all, that is what makes reality television what it is. But, its the constant mention of drama that we, the viewer, don't see. We keep being told that some teams (Team Evo, for example) are cheating or not playing fair, but we really don't see it. There are also apparently other shenanigans that we aren't privy too that take place at rest stops or other places outside the view of the camera. The show also focuses only on a handful of teams and we never even see the others. Luckily one of the teams we get to know a bit are the VW Bus guys. I know they have 12 11 10 teams to cover in only 1 hour plus the end challenge, but still.

Nevertheless, I will suck it up and watch until the beloved VW Bus team is kicked off. On a side note, doesn't it seem like Goldberg, in an effort to look tough or intimidating, just looks angry, like he doesn't want to be there.

Vangaon Map and Update on Wasilla, Alaska buses

Oh no... I've started something here. I was sent a link to a Map of the Proximate Locations of Vanagons in Asheville, NC just in case I come there... lest I be fooled by the evil Vanagon in my hunt for VW Buses. Awesome.

Also, my brother just forwarded a link indicating that the land with the "Mother load of Buses" in Sarah Palin's hometown of Wasilla, Alaska included in my Alaska Buses post is for sale... good timing on the pictures, as that place might soon be a forgotten memory. (if a memory is forgotten, is it a memory?)

Back from Alaska with some Bus Pictures

I took a trip to Alaska to see the family and stumbled upon the mother load in Wasilla. I did see, but was unable to get pictures of, a late-model bus driving around Anchorage and a very unique late-model bay-window truck... at least I think. It was too far away to get a picture. My theory is that people think "hmmm... it would be cool if we drove our bus to" Fairbanks, Mt. McKinley (Denali), or some other northern destination along the Parks Hwy, only to discover that, in fact, it wasn't a good idea and they broke down. Just a theory.

Also, one of our most popular pictures is from a 2006 trip to Alaska in the winter (pictured below).

I drove by the spot where it was parked on this trip and was pleased to see that it was still there and still covered in snow. Presumably, when the snow melts they drive it around since it was in a different place than before.

Vanagons are the Scourge of the VW Bus Spotters

I just need to vent. A Vanagon is not a Bus. We all know that. But sometimes, from afar, even the most trained eye can be fooled into needing to get a closer look. A good example that other, normal people might understand. Imagine you are walking around in Hollywood and you see someone that has to be a celebrity in the distance. You want to get closer to take their picture. You move in closer and BAM! its freakin' Pauly Shore. That is what it is like when I think I see a bus and it ends up being a Vanagon. Stupid Vanagons! And Alaska is full of them, by the way!
